Poet and/the Bench is celebrating our first year and love. With special guests! Artist Adele Crawford will be in person so you can check out and chat about the amazing pieces added to her collection in the store. Calligraphy artist Sarah Hanna will be customizing Valentine’s for shoppers. Stop by from 1-4pm for good times!
“Stringing Words Together”, “Encyclopedia’s with some Volumes Missing”, “BunnyDoggy”, “NYC Dogs unLeashed” and “The World is Flat” are just a few examples of the body of work of Oakland-based artist, Adele Crawford. Join us as we celebrate her thoughtful investigation of ephemera and her delight in the scent of aged paper.
Words matter. A beautifully-expressed sentiment is a true treasure. It is powerful or loving or thought-provoking or clever. It moves and heals and inspires. Sonoma-based calligraphy artist Sarah Hanna is a lettering designer and illustrator. Sarah will be addressing envelopes to loved ones for you to give on Valentine’s Day.
Adele Crawford: I think of myself as a reconstructive caretaker with my practice focusing on re-imagining the neglected and the forgotten. Most of my material comes from investigating and recycling people’s discarded images and objects. I manipulate these materials and weave them into new imaginary stories. Often the transformative process incorporates hand building, hand stitching, beading, and folding. The work materializes from these methodical, repetitive techniques, which naturally are meditative and contemplative. Many of my ancestors spent their lifetime working with their hands doing piece work, brick laying, quilting and baking. I feel a sense of responsibility and respect, as I re-work the ephemeral, for what it was, the use it served, the people to whom it was useful and the short time we are here on earth surrounding ourselves with these things.
Sarah Hanna: Whether it is an invitation, a personalized menu card, or a commissioned painting, there is no substitute for original artwork. As I began my career in the special events industry, I asked a friend, who is one of New England’s top caterers, for advice. She said, “it’s not just the food, honey, it’s the whole show.” My business is founded on the principle that all elements of an event must be congruent and the attention to detail extraordinary. I am a third generation artist with a background in the visual and culinary arts. The joy in my work comes from contributing to the events and celebrations that mark the lives of my clients.
